I’ve been doing a little online spring clean and realised I’ve not updated this section of the website for a while, saying as this is in the FAQ section I’ll answer the most frequent question I get asked these days: How’s Business?
The best answer I can give is fascinating and busy.
On the people side I’ve been working and coaching a few radio presenters who want to make a move upwards in their career. It’s a big ask at the moment as the radio jobs market is so tough but these guys are doing the right thing in adopting a really strategic approach to their job hunt and getting everything aligned right for when those opportunities do come. The days of throwing together a demo of your best links and sending it out are over but there are many things you can do to make sure the next great gig that comes up is as good as yours.
One thing I’d love to do is work with some female presenters, there are so many good ones out there now but not getting picked up by the commercial radio stations they’d be so right for.
Away from media I’ve been doing some performance coaching with people who need some help working on speaking in public. As I mention lots it’s THE most common fear of people and it’s a fear we seem to accept in society unlike a phobia of spiders we’re very understanding of people who don’t like to get in front of an audience and talk.
That’s a shame because if you do it right it’s a lot of fun and if you adopt some good strategies you needn’t have any fear. Having worked for years with people who are natural performers it’s been a pleasure to take some of their skills and secrets and use them with people whose jobs have nothing to do with performing in public they just sometimes have to do it.
I’ve been spending a lot of time working with On The Eighth the creative audio company. It’s been fascinating working with a broad cross section of clients from underwear shops to race meetings! Business is good but I’ve been amazed at the poor level of service in the creative industry. We’re getting great feedback there for having good customer service when all we feel like we are doing is what we should do. In such a movable and busy world as the one we now live in it seems madness that anyone would forget the customer service but they do and sometimes I’ve very glad of it.
I’m also working on a big project which is massively exciting and interesting but I don’t want to say too much about right now. What began as a conversation in the pub has ended up with me advising one of the top people in the country about communications. It’s surreal at times but is going in a very good direction at least.
Finally I’ve been working hard on a radio prep service and getting it right. I’ve been working on it with some presenters in the UK’s biggest markets so it should be good! The feedback on current prep services are that they’re bloated, twee and dated so hopefully this much more modern, concise and puts the presenter at the centre of creativity. It’s just about to launch publicly after some serious testing, if you’d like free sneak preview drop me an email email@example.com
In between times I’ve been riding my bike and going to junior football games as is standard!
