It was heartwarming today to read that Tiger Tim Stevens is back working in radio as a director of new Glasgow station GO.
Growing up in Glasgow he was THE disc jockey. It felt like everyone listened to his evening show on Radio Clyde and it felt like everyone had been to at least one event he appeared at. He was the first person on the radio to actually talk like we talked, no mid-Atlantic DJ accent for him.
Working in radio you had no doubt about his fame. Whenever you asked a taxi driver to drop you off at a radio station the first question they asked was “What’s Tiger Tim really like?”.
Working with him it could be hard to see how he achieved anything. He was massively disorganised and he didn’t so much break every radio rule going, he was totally unaware they even existed. Which was all part of his skill. He just talked to his audience they way he’d talk to his mates. He was a consummate story teller and thrived on getting Glaswegians involved in his show.
Reading what he had to say today about GO it’s obvious he’s keen to extend that ethos to the whole station.
There will be no-one in Scottish radio that doesn’t wish him the best of luck.
