I thought I’d share my favourite Wogan story. One I was told in the early 2000s.
Terry would go home (or to the golf course) shortly after his show finished. His producer would stay behind and go through the emails the show had received in the past 24 hours. There were usually 600 or so of these emails and he would print off the best 50. These would be the show’s content for the next day.
Some would be follow ups from a running thread, others would introduce new themes. Terry would read them out on his next show in his own unique way. That in turn would generate more emails.
That mean the audience were at the heart of every show, and they loved him for it.
With a talent like his there was no need for post-show debriefs. No meetings to decide the next stunt and no contrived attempts to provide a “water-cooler” moment. Just a consistent formula which was loved by millions.
