Apple’s Beats 1 – a quick thought

CG_np0kUYAAh8DBI’ve been as cynical as anyone heading towards the launch of Apple’s radio station Beats 1.

It’s all about selling records, not many people listen to the radio online, Zane Lowe has always been niche. I had every objection going.

And yet when I listened to Zane Lowe deliver the opening show I got excited about it.

I thought the music he played was ok. The production was highly average and Zane’s presenting style sends me nuts. He treats finding a new band like he’s found a cure for cancer.

But the station had a purpose and it was determined to deliver on it. Sure that purpose was flogging Apple Music but they put everything into delivering that.

So much of UK radio right now doesn’t feel like it has a purpose. Often when I turn on it’s people doing things on the radio because … well I’m not sure they know why they’re doing things on the radio. It’s just how it’s always been done.

Beats 1 got me excited. I liked that.
